Community :: Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ)

The Emanuel Sisterhood

The Emanuel Women of Reform Judaism is affiliated with the national organization Women of Reform Judaism, Federation of Temple Sisterhoods. The national organization represents 100,000 women in 600 local Sisterhoods throughout the United States, Canada and thirteen other countries, and is the women’s agency of the Union for Reform Judaism. Contact the WRJ at wrjemanuel@yahoo.com.

Who are we?  We are you!
We are women whose ages span many decades; single women and married women; women with children and those  without;  all interested in  the goals of WRJ. WRJ at Emanuel functions to enrich the religious experience (weekly oneg Shabbats), encourage our temple youth (through OSRUI scholarships and many internal programs),  and support the Congregation in many other ways. The programs we sponsor help us feel better, learn more and develop friendships within the Emanuel Community. We also support Jewish causes outside the Emanuel Community, e.g., Jewish Women International, Jewish Guild for the Blind, and the Chicagoland Jewish Youth and Family Services.

WRJ Board meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month. If you are interested or know someone who might be, please contact Ellen Baren at 312-804-1049 or ellenbaren@gmail.com.

How can I participate?

♦  Attend WRJ-sponsored programs.  Our activities have included such activities as an evening exercise program as well as a to a visit with an American Jewish author, many programs and speakers, and social get-togethers.

♦   Attend board meetings. Yes, these open meetings are held a 7:30 pm on the first Wednesday of each month. You need not be on the board to attend, and it’s good chance to see how the central arm of the WRJ functions and to meet the women of the Board.

♦   Volunteer to help.  We are always grateful for a few extra hands at special programs but also in our more routine tasks:  setting up the oneg Shabbats,  staffing the Sunday morning Emanuel Café.

Send us your ideas for programs or help us create a program that would be of interest to the women of Emanuel
or the whole community

Join the WRJ. Even if you cannot participate, your dues areimportant to helping us continue to serve the women and children of Emanuel.
