Our Building

The Lord spoke to Moses, “And they shall make me a sanctuary and I will dwell in their midst...” Exodus 25:8

Our synagogue on Sheridan Road was built in 1954 after we outgrew our previous building on Buckingham Street. Through the years, many updates and renovations have been completed, all with an eye on making our members and guests feel warm and welcome.

A significant improvement was the remodeling of our sanctuary in 2001. The design, by architects Ross Barney + Jankowski Inc, won an AIA Chicago Design Excellence Award. Translucent white, movable wall panels, along with sails hung from the ceiling, remind us of the tents of Abraham and of living under the clouds during the Exodus from Egypt. Above the ark, a large, colorful stained glass window memorializes those lost during the Holocaust.

This sanctuary-within-a-sanctuary space converts to make Shabbat services feel intimate and welcoming and accommodates up to 1,000 people for High Holiday services. Our remarkable chapel received a beautiful update in 2013 that was featured in the January 2014 edition of Chicago Architect Magazine. Click here to view the article.
