Membership FAQs
Do I have to be Jewish to join Emanuel Congregation?
No. We welcome individuals and families of all backgrounds, including interfaith households, spiritual seekers, and those exploring Judaism. If you’re looking for a warm, inclusive community rooted in Reform Jewish values, you belong here.
Is Emanuel Congregation LGBTQ+ inclusive?
Yes—wholeheartedly. Emanuel proudly welcomes and affirms LGBTQ+ individuals and families. We are committed to being an open, inclusive, and safe space for all members of our community.
What types of memberships are available?
We offer a variety of membership options to meet different household needs, including individual, couple, family, senior, and young adult memberships. In fact, Emanuel is the only Reform synagogue in Chicago to offer a reduced suggested commitment level for seniors (age 65+)—just one more way we strive to be inclusive and accessible. We’re happy to talk with you about what works best for your situation.
How much does membership cost?
We are committed to ensuring that finances are never a barrier to belonging. While we have a suggested annual contribution, we offer flexible dues arrangements and confidential financial assistance. Just reach out—your presence in our community matters more than your payment.
What does membership include?
Membership includes High Holy Day tickets, lifecycle event support, access to our clergy, opportunities to participate in community events and social justice work, discounted religious school tuition, and the chance to be part of a caring, multi-generational spiritual family.
Can I “try out” Emanuel before becoming a member?
Absolutely. We encourage visitors to attend services, join us for Share Shabbat, or participate in a program or class. Feel the spirit of Emanuel firsthand—no pressure, just an open door.
What if I’ve never belonged to a synagogue before?
You’re not alone! Many of our members are new to synagogue life. We’re here to support your journey, answer your questions, and help you feel at home, no matter where you’re starting from.
I’m part of an interfaith family. Will we be welcome?
Yes—with open arms. Interfaith families are a vital part of our community, and we celebrate your presence. We honor each individual’s role in building a Jewish home in their own way.
How can I get more information or speak with someone?
We’d love to talk with you! Please contact our office or email our Executive Director, Tracy Tenenbaum, at Tracyb@emanuelcong.org to ask questions, schedule a tour, or learn more about becoming a member.
