A Few Words from Director of Operations Jessica Katz

August 19, 2019

Dear Chevrei,

There are 42 days until Erev Rosh Hashanah. The office began planning for September
29th at the beginning of July, and were very excited to be getting things ready
alongside the clergy and board so as to provide the most comfortable and welcoming
observance possible. Emanuel continuously strives to participate in the URJ's 2020
vision of Audacious Hospitality- the aspiration that everyone can feel at home in the
Jewish community- and this year's High Holy Days will be another example of how we
open our doors to our congregants, the community, and beyond.

I love picking our ticket colors- it's a relatively small decision, but I have a list of all the
colors we've used since 2004, and knowing that you all will be opening these envelopes
at home and setting your brightly colored tickets aside until the right time is fulfilling
and sweet. Want to know what color our tickets are this year? Send me an email with
your guess, and the first correct guess will receive one free admission to the next Share
Shabbat! Be sure to make membership renewal arrangements with our bookkeeper,
Lorraine Fogarty, lfogarty@emanuelcong.org by August 26th in order to receive your tickets on time.

I also wanted to take a moment to address safety and security. This is the first High
Holy Day observance since the tragedies at Tree of Life and Chabad of Poway, and
security is at the forefront of our minds. I am working with our security committee, our
officers, lay leaders, and staff so that we can collectively continue to provide a safe and
spiritually fulfilling environment to all whom attend Emanuel. Please be sure to
familiarize yourself with all points of entry and exit as you attend services, and don't
hesitate to reach out to a staff member, usher, or officer if you have any questions or
concerns during the 10 Days of Awe.

Seeing the facilities staff open up the big room and set out the chairs is always exciting.
The feeling of potential and anticipation in the big room is palatable, and once the
portable Ark has been moved into place, the combined space in the Sanctuary/Lederer
feels like the Shabbat Kallah, the Sabbath bride, waiting patiently for sunset and
services to begin. We look forward to seeing you on September 29th- if not before!
